Though Dems will probably also need to reclaim the middle ground in religious terms also - those people who go to church and - if pressed - will say gay marriage "isn't right", but who feel their gay niece is just wonderful and let's just let it alone, now shall we? The whole Mary Cheney / anti-gay marriage amendment / last minute Bush flip-flop on that issue played very well to that emotional current, without managing to disturb the Faith the fundamentalist crowd has in Dubya.
